Surry Hills is a stylish suburb in New South Wales with a population of over 15,000. It is situated immediately south-east of Sydney’s central business district and away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

History

It was in the 1790s when the first land grants were made in Surry Hills. A man called Major Joseph Foveaux was given 105 acres of the land. He named his property Surry Hills Farm after the Surrey Hills in Surrey, England. Foveaux Street in the suburb is named after him.

After World War II, Surry Hills became home to lots of families. The property prices were low at this time. Nowadays, the area attracts the upper middle class and young rich people.

Surry Hills has everything on the doorstep. From pubs, cafes and restaurants to art galleries, parks and schools, the suburb is a great place to live and visit.

The shops are pretty amazing, as are the transport links. You can also find many heritage buildings dotted around Surry Hills. The Surry Hills Festival draws in thousands of people and is worth checking out. It is held every year around Ward Park, Shannon Reserve, Crown Street and Hill Street.
