St Marys is a suburb in western Sydney. It is located 45 kilometres west of the Sydney central business area in the local government area of the City of Penrith. It has a population of over 10,000.

History

Originally known as South Creek because of its location close to the creek, the suburb was later named after the parish church of St Mary Magdalene. Situated between the Great Western Highway and King Street it was completed in 1840. The flagstone, laid in 1837 by Bishop Broughton, identifies it as one of the oldest churches in New South Wales still holding regular services.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Bennett coach and wagon works manufactured horse-drawn wagons for the transport demands of the area. Thanks to the rich soils along the creek, the area became an expanding agricultural community. Close location to what is now the Great Western Highway also led St Marys to become a convenient staging post.
