South Hurstville is a suburb in southern Sydney. It is located 18km from the Sydney CBD, in the St George area. South Hurstville has a population of 4,928.

History

The area now known as Hurstville was granted to Captain John Townson and his brother in 1808. The brothers weren’t happy with the timbered land, and sold it to merchant Simeon Lord, who named the area Lord’s Bush. After his death, the land was then sold to Michael Gannon, and the name changed to Gannon’s Forest. The local school was known as Hurstville, and eventually when the train station was built in 1884, it took its name from the school and Hurstville was born.

While South Hurstville is mainly a residential suburb, the area does have a park, Poulton Park, and a library, and some shops. It has supermarkets and fast food vendors, as well as liquor stores and the iconic local pub, Kings Head Tavern.
