South Albury is a small city suburb, situated just three kilometres south of Albury’s central business district. It’s home to just 1,100 people, and is very close to New South Wales’ border with Victoria. The whole of Albury is home to well over 50,000 people.

History

South Albury has a history of flooding because of its Murray River floodplain location. But thanks to work carried out in the 1990s, the risk of flooding has been significantly reduced. After the explorers Hume and Hovell arrived in Albury in 1824, the first European buildings were constructed. Before the city was named Albury after a village in Kent in 1839, it was known as Bungambrewatha. The first school in Albury was built in 1888.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

South Albury is made up of both industrial and residential areas, but at only three kilometres from Albury city centre, there’s plenty to see and do. Albury Library Museum, an art gallery and a performing arts centre can be found on QE2 Square. If you’re a fan of watersports, you can boat, fish and even hire a canoe at Lake Hume.
