Shortland is a residential suburb in Newcastle. It lies 12km from Newcastle’s central business district. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 3,705.

History

Lieutenant John Shortland is the town’s namesake. He was the master’s mate of the Sirius. The Sirius was the escorting vessel to the first fleet.

The area cannot develop further because it’s surrounded by wetlands.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Government established the Hunter Wetlands Centre in 1984. It is in the wetlands between Shortland and Hexham Swamp. The centre provides a habitat for bird and wildlife species. It’s a recreational and learning space for visitors. Tourists have reported seeing yowies in the area.

The town has several sporting facilities. This includes the Shortland Waters Golf Course, netball courts and sporting ovals. The area has two primary schools and one high school. The University of Newcastle is close by in Callaghan.
