Ryde is a suburb in New South Wales with a population of over 21,500. It is located 13 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district and lies on the north bank of the Parramatta River.

History

The naming of Ryde came from the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It was once called Wallumatta by the Aboriginal people. The area also became known as Top Ryde because it was situated at the top of the hill.

Ryde is home to the oldest settler’s cottage in Australia. Other historic buildings include the Georgian home called Willandra, as well as the police station.

The area of Ryde features Santa Rosa Park and Shrimptons Creek. It also contains a major shopping centre.
