Rooty Hill is a part of the Greater Western Sydney region, located 42km west of the Sydney central business district. The suburb is home to around 13,500 people.

History

Captain Watkin Tench led the earliest recorded exploration of the area now known as Rooty Hill in 1789 with the name first appearing on a map in 1803.

It is believed that the peculiar name comes from a place in Norfolk Island where Governor Phillip Gidley King’s construction of a house was hampered by tree roots beneath the land. King returned to New South Wales and built the headquarters of a government reserve here in 1802 in an area which reminded him of the Norfolk Island Rooty Hill and he decided to use the same name.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main commercial area of Rooty Hill is situated on Rooty Hill Road near the train station and is home to a number of shopping strips featuring stores, cafes and eateries.

Elsewhere, Root Hill has a number of parks including Angus Park and the May Cowpe Reserve.
