Redfern is an inner-city Sydney suburb. It is 3 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 12,000.

History

The suburb is named for surgeon, William Redfern. In 1817, Redfern was granted 100 acres of land in the area. Sydney’s original railway terminus was named for Redfern. It was built in Cleveland Paddocks, now Prince Alfred Park. Central Station opened in 1906. Eveleigh station became ‘Redfern’ station in Redfern’s honour.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Redfern is known for its indigenous community. They are 2.4% of Redfern’s population.

Redfern was the site of ‘The Block’. This was the first urban Aboriginal community housing provider. The group used grant money to purchase houses near Redfern station. It is currently being redeveloped.

Redfern has become increasingly gentrified in recent years.

The main shopping strip is near the train station. It features many shops, cafes and restaurants.

A number of sporting teams represent Redfern. One of them is the national rugby league team the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
