Welcome to Raymond Terrace, NSW
The town of Raymond Terrace in the Hunter Region of NSW is named after Lieutenant Raymond. Located where the Hunter and Williams Rivers meet, the town is part of the Port Stephens Local Government area. The name also alludes to the terracing effect of the landscape which first caught Raymond’s attention when he explored the area. The population is over 12,000 people.
History
Land grants were made available in the 1820’s and the town was established in 1837. James King was one of the first residents of the area and he established a vineyard and one of the first potteries. After the first steamships started using the river, Raymond Terrace became a thriving port of call for this increasing traffic.
The quarrying of sandstone close to the town was used in the construction of many buildings during the 1860’s including the churches, some houses, and the steam-powered saw mill.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Raymond Terrace has four primary schools and 2 high schools. The two main shopping centres are in the town centre around Raymond Terrace Market Place and Terrace Central, which was formerly the Raymond Terrace Plaza.
The Hunter Valley Buses provide local transport and services to Newcastle Station. The town is home to the Muree Golf Club and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club and they are both licensed.
