Randwick is one of Sydney’s many Eastern suburbs. It is just 6km outside of the city’s central business district. It has a population of over 27,000 people.

History

Randwick is named after an English village in Gloucestershire. This village was the birthplace of Simeon Henry Peace, who was the Mayor of Randwick six times. He was responsible for much of the area’s development in the mid-nineteenth century.

With a rich history, Randwick is home to many heritage sites. These include Centennial Park, St Jude’s Church, the Prince of Wales Hospital, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, and the former Star and Garter Inn, which is now Hannan’s Butcher Shop.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Now a residential area, Randwick is home to a number of churches, schools and sporting facilities. Most notable is The Randwick Racecourse. The Randwick Racecourse runs regular horse races and is very popular.
