Punchbowl is a diverse residential suburb with a population of around 18,500 people. It is located 17km west of the Sydney central business district.

History

Punchbowl takes its name from a circular valley in the suburb of Belfield which early residents thought actually resembled a punch bowl.

An inn was opened in the 1830s called the Punch and Bowl and the town became known as Punchbowl when a railway station opened nearby in 1909. In the 20s and 30s, the suburb was quite affluent and was best known for its theatres and nightlife.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Though the theatres have now disappeared, Punchbowl still has plenty to offer visitors with a shopping centre, The Broadway Plaza, located near the railway station.

The town features an array of architectural styles including some fantastic art-deco buildings though much of Punchbowl has been developed since the turn of the century.
