Penshurst is a peaceful suburb in the New South Wales area. It has a population of over 11,600 and is located 17 kilometres south of Sydney’s central business district.

History

The suburb takes its name from the town of Penshurst, Kent, England. It was part of the land grant to Robert Townson. In 1830, the land was obtained by a man called John Connell. He left the land to his grandsons J.C. and E.P. Laycock who went on to divide and sell the land.

Penshurst’s railway station opened in 1890. A large estate owned by the MacRae family once sat to the south of the railway line. The original house and caretaker’s house can still be found on Laycock Road today.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town has a shopping centre and shopping strip filled with supermarkets, cafes, beauty salons and fashion outlets. Penshurst is home to a railway station, as well as both public and Catholic schools.

Local attractions include tennis courts, an aquatic centre, parks and The Gamesman Store and Museum.
