Old Bar is a town in Gloucester, New South Wales. It sits on the eastern coastline, around 315km north-east of Sydney. Old Bar is part of the Mid-Coast Council, and has a population of over 3,600.

History

In terms of European settlement, the Old Bar area was first explored by John Oxley in 1818. The first land was sold in 1854, and Old Bar blossomed into a thriving fishing town. The town’s beachside location soon made it popular with tourists, and it’s been a holiday haven since the late 19th century. In 1928, the Old Bar Surf Lifesaving Club was established. It continues to patrol to this very day.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Manning River borders the north of Old Bar, while the Tasmanian Sea sits to the east. This makes it a magnet for fans of maritime recreation. Manning Entrance State Park is perched between the town and the beach, and the streets are lined with a host of restaurants and bars. The Old Bar Beach Festival occurs every October, and draws in visitors from near and far.
