Oberon is a town in NSW’s central tablelands. It is 160 kilometres west of Sydney’s CBD. The town’s population is over 2,400.

History

The town’s post office first opened in 1855.

A branch railway line to Oberon began service in 1923. The line’s steep 4% gradients and sharp 100 metre-radius curves are unusual.

Closing in 1979, the line fell into disrepair. Volunteer organisation, Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway, began restoring it in 2005.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Oberon is 1,113 metres above sea level. It is the highest town in the Blue Mountains. Oberon’s high altitude results in winter snowfall most years.

The main industries include farming, forestry and wood products.

Oberon and its surrounds are picturesque. The town is close to the Jenolan Caves and Kanangra-Boyd National Park. The park accommodates vehicle-based camping. The Boyd River is open to the public for swimming and fishing.

The Reef Reserve is a popular fishing spot. South of the town is Lake Oberon, Oberon Dam and the Fish River. Oberon Dam has a picnic area and the lake has a reserve with walking tracks.
