Oatley is a suburb in Southern Sydney, located along the George’s River. It has a population of 10,098.

History

The suburb is named after James Oatley Snr. Oatley was a watchmaker, who was deported to Botany Bay in 1814. Oatley was pardoned in 1821, for his work in installing the clock at Hyde Park Barracks.

In 1903, the Post Office opened, giving the locality its official name. Oatley used to be the end of Sydney’s railway network from Central in the 1920s.

In Oatley Park, native mammals that are rare in the Sydney area reside including the swamp wallaby. The large park is a significant area of bushland in the modern day St George area.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The locality is close to some of Sydney’s best government and private schools in the wider region. As a result, the area is popular with families. It features several boutique restaurants and historic churches.
