Nyngan is a town in central NSW. The town is 583km north-west of Sydney by road. It has a population of more than 2,000.
History
The area was once home to the Ngiyambaa people.
‘Nyngan’ comes from local word ‘nyingan’. It likely means ‘long pond of water’. This refers to the Bogan River, which runs alongside Nyngan.
Explorer Thomas Mitchell surveyed the area in 1835. Settlers had arrived before Mitchell departed.
The railway arrived in Nyngan in 1883 and the town boomed.
Nyngan flooded in 1990. Residents were evacuated by helicopter from the railway station, Nyngan’s highest point. The total damage amounted to $50 million.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Passenger trains stopped servicing Nyngan in the 1980s. The railway station houses a museum relating to the 1990 flood. An Army helicopter stands outside, commemorating the airlift. Air Force, TV and privately-owned helicopters co-operated in the airlift.
