Nowra is a town that lies in the South Coast region of NSW. 160km south-southwest of Sydney, it has a population of over 35,000 with its twin-town Bomaderry.

History

South of Bomaderry Creek, The Nowra region was home to the Wodi-Wodi tribe of the Yuin nation. The Dharawal people lived in the north prior to European arrival.

Ex-convict Mary Reibey applied for a land grant in the Burrier area in around 1824. In 1852, the Nowra township was officially recognised. In 1961, the postal service was established. In 1885, Nowra was declared a town.

The region around Nowra is mostly farmland, with a big dairy industry, and is home to a number of State forests.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town features a town hall, a modern primary school, and a large retirement village. Tourists come to the beaches to swim, surf and fish. There are many restaurants and cafes, along with a large range of shops and boutiques.
