North Ryde is a suburb of Sydney, NSW. It is 15 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD. Its population is over 10,100.

History

The area was once home to the Wallumedegal people.

Ryde is the third oldest European settlement in Australia. ‘Ryde’ is a town on the UK’s Isle of Wight.

North Ryde began as a farming district in the mid-19th century. The main street connected to the Lane Cove River wharf. It was sandstone-paved to make goods haulage easier.

North Ryde remained rural until World War II. It saw rapid development in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of the remaining original buildings are heritage-listed. This includes the schoolhouse.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

North Ryde has many beautiful parks. Wallumatta Nature Reserve is one of the last remnants of Sydney’s original turpentine-ironbark forests. As of 2007, 0.5% of such forest survives.

North Ryde is one of Australia’s major business districts. Multi-nationals represented include Microsoft and Honeywell.

The suburb is home to Macquarie University. The CSIRO has headquarters here.
