Normanhurst is a suburb of Sydney’s upper North Shore. It is 23 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD. Normanhurst’s population is over 5,100.

History

The area was once home to the Darug and Kurringgai people.

Normanhurst was first named ‘Hornsby’. Normanhurst railway station opened in 1895 as ‘Hornsby’.

But this caused confusion. The Northern and North Shore railway lines joined one stop north at ‘Hornsby Junction’. Hornsby Junction had opened in 1886 as ‘Hornsby’. So ‘Hornsby’ became ‘Normanhurst’ in 1900.

‘Normanhurst’ has two origins. ‘Hurst’ is the English word for a wooded hill. ‘Norman’ is for prominent resident civil engineer Norman Selfe.

Norman Selfe disapproved of the name change.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Normanhurst has extensive bushland including several small waterfalls. Native bird and reptile life is abundant.

Normanhurst is largely residential. But there is a small commercial area. Shops include restaurants, a dry cleaner and an original milk bar.
