Newcastle is the second most populous area of New South Wales. The city straddles the mouth of the Hunter River. It has a vibrant population of 308,308.

History

The area was home to the Awabakal and Worimi people. The first European settlers arrived in 1797. John Shortland discovered the area accidentally. Newcastle was originally a penal colony. It earned a reputation as a “hellhole” in the 18th century.

Newcastle takes its name from the English city of the same name. The last convicts left the area in 1823. During The Second World War, the city was an important centre for the war effort.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Newcastle is home to the University of Newcastle. Several annual festivals are held in the city. These include the Newcastle Regional Show, the Mattara Festival and The Newcastle Jazz Festival.

Numerous sports teams represent the city. These include the NRL’s Newcastle Knights, the AIHL’s Newcastle North Stars, and Newcastle Jets FC.
