Narrandera is a medium-sized town with under 4,000 inhabitants in the Riverina region. It lies on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River and is the gateway to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.

History

Indigenous tribes lived in this region before the arrival of the Europeans. The name Narrandera comes from the Wiradjuri word “nharrang”, meaning “frill-necked lizard”.

The first European explorers visited the area now known as Narrandera as early as 1821. In 1848 the first settlers used the land as pastoral grounds. By the 1860s Narrandera was a township.

Narrandera is a pretty town with many tree-lined streets. Take a stroll through the Narrandera Memorial Gardens and discover the ceramic Hankinson Fountain. It is one of only two ceramic fountains in the world. And why not take the time to rest in the shade of the 150-year-old fig tree on the corner of King and Cadell Street.
