History

Mt Hutton is a small suburb in the City of Lake Macquarie, which is located within the Hunter Valley. A Mr John Dunkley suggested it be named after a local doctor who lived close to a distinctive hill in the area. From 1931 to 1937 the suburb had access to a private bus service. This ran from Speers Point to Charlestown and Newcastle. It was replaced in 1937 by government-run transport.

Mt Hutton is fourteen kilometres from Newcastle’s central business district. Located not far from the coast, it is twelve kilometres from Newcastle beach. A notable location within the suburb is the Lake Macquarie Fair shopping centre. Opened in 1985, it adjoins the Mt Hutton Plaza.
