Moruya is a town on the south coast of New South Wales. It sits on an intersection between the Moruya River and the Princes Highway, and has a population of more than 2,500. Moruya is part of the Eurobodalla Shire local government area.

History

The land around the Moruya River was first home to the Brinja-Yuin and Walbanga tribes. The word “Moruya” is derived from their language, and means “home of the black swan”. Early European settlers arrived in the 1820s, and the township of Moruya was surveyed in 1850. It quickly thrived, with local industry encompassing dairy farms, gold mines, lumber camps and quarries.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Moruya is very much known as a tourist town. It’s close to the coast and surrounded by stunning scenery, and the town itself is very well equipped. It boasts numerous restaurants and bars, as well as an excellent shopping district. An airport is located in Moruya Heads, an area which also includes various beaches and the Moruya Heads Lookout. Local attractions include the Moruya Racecourse, Moruya Museum, Historic Quarry Park and Deua National Park.
