Located in New South Wales, Mortlake is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney. It has a small population of 754 and is 17 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district.

History

Before it became Mortlake, the area was called Bottle Point. The name Mortlake comes from the banks of the Thames in London. The suburb is known as the site of the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL) gasworks.

Gladesville Bridge was opened in Mortlake in 1964. Around the same time, the gas works closed and the land was transformed into a residential development.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mortlake is regarded as a historical suburb on the Parramatta River. The suburb is home to the Mortlake Ferry, which is commonly called Putney Punt by locals. It’s actually the last surviving punt service in the whole of Sydney.
