Welcome to Mortdale, NSW
Located 20km south of Sydney’s central business district, Mortdale is part of the Georges River Council. It was named after Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. He became famous for his groundbreaking work in developing refrigerated transport of meat. The area has a population of close to 10,000 people.
History
Mortdale was first founded as a small farming community of 17 farms after the subdivision of the land in 1827. By 1884 brick making was the main economy of the area and the population saw steady increases following the arrival of the railway around the same time.
Schools, a store, and the Post Office were opened in 1889 and by the 1920s the suburb’s population was swelled by soldiers returning from the First World War.
Lifestyle and entertainment
The suburb is primarily a residential area with some limited commercial and industrial developments located mainly in the north-west of the area. A shopping centre is situated on Morts Road near the Railway Station and the town has its own Fire Station.
Mortdale has several schools, churches, and sporting venues along with parks and waterways. There are a war memorial and many buildings of historical interest. Transport is provided by the Sydney Trains Network and a local bus service.
