Mittagong is a town often viewed as being the gateway to the Southern Highlands. It is 130km from Sydney and has a population of over 8,000 people.

History

European settlement began in the area in 1821 with the arrival of a former convict called William Chalker. The area became known as Chalkers Flat though this was changed to New Sheffield in 1864. A memorial plaque in honour of the town’s founder was unveiled in 1988 and many of his descendants still live in the area to this day.

It is believed that the name Mittagong, comes from a local Aboriginal word which means ‘little mountain’.

Situated between three small mountain reserves, the great outdoors is never far away for the residents of Mittagong.

As well as spectacular scenery and bushwalks, the town is also home to famous Waratah flowering which takes place each November.
