Only 3km from Newcastle’s central business district, the suburb of Merewether grew with the expansion of the coal mining industry. The last colliery closed in 1959 and now the area is a popular location for tourists. The suburb has a population of around 10,000 people.

History

Once a part of the Burwood Estate, it was named after the owner Edward Christopher Merewether. The Church of England in Merewether is St Augustine’s. In 1890 it became the centre of a new Provisional District in the Diocese of Newcastle. In 1901 David Lloyd, a funeral Director was also the Mayor.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is well known for its beaches and as an area of natural beauty. The Merewether beach is the home of the oldest lifesaving club in the area along with Merewether Surfing Club. There are several public schools including a grammar school.

Places of interest include the one-time residence of the Merewether family. They once lived in what is now one of the oldest mansions in the area. The suburb is also the location of the Lingard Private Hospital and Merewether Bowling Club.
