Marrickville is a suburb in New South Wales with a population of around 24,000. It is situated 7 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district and is the largest suburb in the inner west council local government area.

History

A man called Thomas Chalder named the suburb after his Marrick estate. The name comes from a small town called Marrick in North Yorkshire, England. This town in England was Chalder’s place of birth. The estate was located at the intersection of Chapel Street and Victoria Road. The publican of the Marrick Hotel, William Dean is responsible for adding the word “ville” to Marrick.

The first school in Marrickville opened in 1864 and the railway line to Bankstown opened in 1895.

Marrickville is home to lots of restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes, as well as bakeries and posh coffee shops. The suburb has plenty of live music venues and a thriving artistic community.
