Maitland is a city of around 70,000 people located 35km north-west of Newcastle. It lies near the Hunter River in the Lower Hunter Valley.

History

First known as West Maitland, the town was privately founded in 1820 and grew quickly on account of its location on the banks of the Hunter River. Until the period of the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s, it was the second largest town in Australia.

Maitland is named after Sir George Maitland, an English MP who was also the Under Secretary for the Colonies.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Maitland has a busy commercial area, home to many shopping centres, restaurants and retail outlets. It is also a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as the Maitland Gaol and the Walka Water Works.

The suburb of Morpeth is also well worth a visit for its historic river port and array of fashion boutiques, cafes and speciality shops.
