A suburb in southern Sydney, Lugarno is 23km south of the Sydney CBD. Situated off the northern bank of the Georges River, it’s known for its large areas of bushland. It has a population of around 6000.

History

Named by surveyors Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and William Govett in 1843, Lugarno takes its name from Lake Lugarno, Switzerland. Lugarno became a mainly residential area in the 1960s when land was released for home sites.

During the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983, the 1996 bushfires, and the Christmas 2001 and Summer 2002 bushfires, Lugarno suffered critical fire outbreaks.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Lugarno is home to two small sets of shops featuring all manner of conveniences. These include supermarkets, restaurants, and a chemist, among many others. It’s also the home ground of two soccer clubs, a junior baseball club, a Rugby League and a Rugby Union club.
