Leichhardt is a suburb in Sydney’s Inner West. It is 5 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 13,500.

History

The area was once home to the Wangal group of the Dharug people.

The name ‘Leichhardt’ is for explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. He travelled 4,800 kilometres overland in 1844. He walked from southern Queensland to Port Essington. The port is 300 kilometres north of Darwin.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Leichhardt thrived and changed with post-war migration. Sydney’s ‘Little Italy’, Leichhardt is the Italian community’s hub. The commercial areas show this. Many businesses were or are Italian owned. These include specialist bookstores and grocery shops.

Italian culture inspired local buildings. The ‘Italian Forum’ is like a village square. Its central courtyard has cafes. A library and small boutiques are upstairs. Residential flats are on the top floor.

Leichhardt is famous for its cafe culture and Italian restaurants.

Every October, Italian Festa celebrates cultural diversity. A World Food Fair takes over Leichhardt’s main streets, blocked off from traffic. Other festival events include community expos and markets.
