Lambton is a suburb of Newcastle with a population of 5,003. It is located 8 kilometres from Newcastle’s central business district.

History

Founded in 1871, Lambton was a coal-mining township. By 1901, it had collieries, coke-ovens, and a soap works. Lambton Colliery was operated by the Scottish-Australian Coal Mining Company. It was the area’s largest employer until it closed in the late 1950s.

Lambton also has a rich sporting history. Lambton Park hosted Australia’s first ever organised soccer match. Newcastle’s oldest rugby league club was also founded in Lambton’s Smiths pub.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Lambton Park is one of the area’s main attractions. It is famous for “The Rotunda”, a 19th-century bandstand. Swimmers and divers can enjoy the park’s various pools. These include an Olympic-size pool, a diving pool, and a children and toddler pool.

The park also boasts a children’s play area, as well as various sporting fields.
