Kurri Kurri is in the Hunter region of New South Wales and has a population of around 5,700. It is considered a small town that is well known for its murals.

History

The name Kurri Kurri is taken from the Awabakal language. It means “the beginning” or “the first.” A district surveyor called T. Smith named the town because he thought Kurri Kurri meant ‘hurry along.’

Kurri Kurri was a coal mining area from 1891. The Richmond Main Colliery was once the state’s largest producer of coal before closing in 1967.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kurri Kurri hosts a Nostalgia Festival every year, featuring bike shows, hot rod performances and rock ‘n’ roll dancing. The area has become internationally renowned for its many painted murals that symbolise the town’s history.

There is also Loxford Park Speedway, which is a motorcycle speedway that hosts a round of the Australian Solo Speedway Championship each year.
