Welcome to Kurrajong Heights, NSW
Kurrajong Heights is a small town in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia. It is 79 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s CBD. It has a population of over 800 people.
History
Kurrajong Heights was previously known as Northfield. The area was, and remains, known for its orchards.
Explorer Matthew James Everingham discovered the area in 1795.
The first Kurrajong Heights post office opened in the 1860s. The first church, St David’s, was built in 1867. Both still stand. As does Lochiel House, built in 1825 by freed Scottish convict Joseph Douglass. These buildings remain well-maintained tourist attractions.
In 1926, the railway line was extended from Richmond. This occurred after years of petitioning from local orchard growers. The railway line closed in 1952.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Kurrajong Heights has many quality restaurants. It is famous for its craft stores and bed-and-breakfast style accommodation. This includes farmstays like Madison’s Mountain Retreat. Every October, Madison’s stages an alpaca shearing day. It is open to the public.
Many orchards offer ‘pick your own fruit’ service for visitors. Stone fruit, apples, and nuts are available.
The annual ‘Back to Back’ competition is a popular local event. Every June, teams from all over the world compete. They must hand shear a sheep, spin the wool and knit a jumper in eight hours. All proceeds go to charity.
Tutti Frutti Rose Farm’s open day every December is another popular local event.
