Kensington is a suburb just 6km away from Sydney’s central business district. Locals affectionately refer to it as “Kenso”. It has a bustling population of 12,776.

History

Before Europeans arrived, the area was home to the Cadigal people. Early European settlers called the area Lachlan Mills Estate, Stannumville, and Epsom. The suburb finally took the name of Kensington in the late 1880s.

The suburb was mostly industrial. The W.D. & H.O. Willis tobacco factory opened in 1902. Today, it is a listed building. Kensington Racecourse operated from 1893 until the 1960s. During the Boer War, and the Second and First World War, it housed military horses and troops.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kensington is home to the main campus of the University of New South Wales. Other local landmarks include the Australian Golf Club and the National Institute of Dramatic Art. Otherwise, the suburb is mainly residential.
