History

The man who set up the settlement here, Enoch William Rudder, chose the area because it seemed like a good place to cut red cedar. He also thought he could make money by selling off his land. He chose the name of the town because the area made him think of the Kempsey Valley in Worcestershire, England.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Central Business District of Kempsey sometimes suffers from flooding. Council buildings, banks and other businesses are located in a second business area.
Kempsey now has a bypass, and this bypass has the longest bridge in Australia. It is called the Macleay River Bridge. Kempsey is linked to both Sydney and Brisbane by train.
