Welcome to Katoomba, NSW
Katoomba in the City of Blue Mountains area is the chief town of the region. Located on the Great Western Highway, it is 11km west of Sydney. The railway station at Katoomba is on the Main Western line. The area has a population of over 8,000 people.
History
The area grew as a tourist area at the end of the 1800s and was also growing while coal mining expanded in the area until the supplies ran out in the early 20th century. The region declined after this time but has undergone a period of rejuvenation since the 1960s. Many young families took advantage of the inexpensive cost of housing in the area at that time.
By the 1980s the guest houses and hotels in the area were becoming popular once again resulting in many properties being renovated. This has pushed the price of property back up but it is still much lower than the Sydney Metropolitan Area.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The mainstay of Katoomba’s economy is tourism and this is based on the dramatic mountain scenery. This includes the world famous three Sisters which can be seen from Echo Point. There are several nature trails which are accessed from the Giant Stairway and these attractions pull in over four million visitors each year.
The area is rich in culture and there are many historic and heritage-listed buildings in the region. The region has also retained a large Aboriginal community including that Gundungurra and Darug tribes.
