Junee is a mid-sized town with 4,400 inhabitants. It is located in the Riverina region 220 kilometres north-west of Canberra.
History
There are several theories on how Junee got its name. It is likely to be of Aboriginal origin and could either mean “speak to me” or “frog”. Before the arrival of the first European settlers, the land was home to the Wiradjuri tribe.
A man named Leopold de Salis was the first to establish the ‘Jewnee’ pastoral in the 1840s. Great rail access to Sydney and Melbourne meant the town could easily transport its produce to the big markets.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Due to its many interesting attractions, Junee has become an attractive tourist destination. Visit the Licorice and Chocolate Factory in the town’s old flour mill or spend a few hours at the rail and transport museum Junee Roundhouse. The historic homestead of Monte is always worth a visit, too.
