The town of Inverell sits on the western slopes of the Northern Tablelands. Both the Macintyre River and the Gwydir Highway pass through it. The town is the centre of Inverell Shire and has a population of 16,075.

History

Alexander Campbell established Inverell Station in 1848. The town takes its name from that station, and was officially established in 1851. There were other possible names for the area, however. It was called Green Swamp in the 1850s. The local post office initially named itself Byron Post Office.

Although the area is fertile agricultural land, there is also a rich local history of mining. Diamonds were mined nearby from 1883 until 1922. From 1919 until 1960, sapphires were mined at Frazers Creek.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Inverell is the end point of the Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic. This is a one day cycling event in which cyclists ride for 230 kilometres.
