Illawong is a residential suburb in the Sutherland Shire, NSW. It’s located 27km from the Sydney central business district. It has a population of 7,330.

History

Illawong is an Aboriginal word meaning “between two waters”. This refers to the Georges and Woronora Rivers. The Tharawal and/or Eora tribes lived in the area. Historians found rock carvings and cave paintings.

Captain John Hunter was the first European to explore the area in 1789. In the 1890’s, the area was home to the wealthy. They built holiday homes and weekenders in the area. Further development occurred in the 1970’s. The area was damaged by the 1994 Eastern Seaboard Fires.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Illawong Village is the main shopping centre. It was originally a small collection of shops. Developers rebuilt the centre in 2007. It contains a supermarket and specialty shops.
