Huskisson is a coastal town in NSW. It is 24km south-east of neighbouring Nowra. It has a population of under 1,000.

History

The area was once home to the Koori people.

The town’s namesake was William Huskisson. He was a UK Member of Parliament and financier. In 1830, he died in the world’s first widely reported railway casualty. He was fatally wounded by pioneering locomotive engine Rocket.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Huskisson is a prime tourist destination year-round. The town is situated alongside Currambene Creek. The creek also serves as an anchorage and fishing port.

The town sits on the shores of Jervis Bay. The area is famed for its beaches. These beaches are said to have ‘the whitest sand in the world’. The area is popular for fishing, scuba diving and swimming. It is a popular whale watching spot. Humpback and southern right whales are both regularly spotted. They pass the entrance to the bay while migrating, both north and south.

The Jervis Bay Visitors Information Centre is at Huskisson. It is part of the Lady Denman Maritime Museum and Gallery.
