Horsley is a suburb of Wollongong, NSW. It is approximately 100km from Sydney’s CBD. It has a population of over 6,700.

History

Horsley is the Wollongong suburb of Dapto’s newest residential region.

The area was originally the 500-acre property ‘West Horsley’. It was named after the owner’s home in Surrey, England. The Victorian-style homestead, ‘Horsley House’, was built circa 1850.

Part of the property was resumed in 1972 for public housing. The first Draft Strategic Plan was released in 1987 to develop Horsley into a residential hub. Also known as ‘West Dapto’, it has developed rapidly since.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Horsley became home to the new Dapto Primary school in 2004. It is also the site of the area’s new community centre.

Horsley’s population is 1.5% indigenous.

Horsley has a small commercial area with shops. It is surrounded by parkland and playing fields. Horsley also offers a skate park and a shooting range.

Horsley has some beautiful scenery. There is farmland to the north, west and south of Horsley. The Dapto cliffs and Mt Bong Bong lie to the west. Part of the Illawarra escarpment range, these mountains provide a scenic backdrop.
