Based in New South Wales, Gunnedah is a town in the Liverpool Plains. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 7,800 people. Gunnedah neighbours Carroll, Manilla, and Curlewis. It is 332km north-west of Sydney.

History

In the early 1830s, European sheep farmers settled in Gunnedah. Before then, the area was largely home to Aboriginal people. Gunnedah gets its name from the indigenous people that lived there originally. The area was known for a time as ‘The Woolshed’ because of its connection with sheep farming.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Gunnedah claims to be the koala capital of the world. That title is also given to Port Macquarie and Port Stephens. Nevertheless, Gunnedah is home to many cute koala bears. Popular koala hang-outs in Gunnedah include the Porcupine Lookout and River Red Gum.

Gunnedah has been the home of a few famous faces, including supermodel Miranda Kerr.
