Gundagai is a small town in New South Wales, 390km southwest of Sydney. It has a population of around 2,000.

History

Gundagai is thought to get its name from ‘Gundagair’ which was a pastoral run in 1838 belonging to William Hutchinson.

The Aboriginal word ‘gair’ means bird. Gundagai translates to “place of birds” and may refer to the area north of the town and not the town itself. The word could also mean “cut with a hand-axe behind the knee”.

Gundagai is part of the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri speaking people. The first attempts to establish the area as a colonial township came in 1838. Gundagai Post Office opened in 1843.
