Griffith is a major regional city in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in the western part of the Riverina region of New South Wales. It has a population of over 19,500.

History

Griffith was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. It’s named after Arthur Hill Griffith, the first New South Wales Minister of Public Works.

It was established in 1916 as part of the NSW State Government’s Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) project. The project supplies irrigation from the Murrumbidgee River for farm use. The construction of the Snowy River scheme in the 1950s and 1960s added to the water supply.

Due to irrigation, a large range of fruits and vegetables have grown in the area including citrus fruits. It became a city in 1987.

Griffith is home to many vineyards and wineries. It is rich in agriculture and is known as Australia’s “Wine and Food Country”.
