Greystanes is a suburb of Sydney. It is 29 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 21,700.

History

The area was first called ‘Prospect Hill’ by European settlers. The area was the site of the first NSW land grants given to emancipated convicts in 1791. The indigenous Darug people waged years of guerrilla warfare against the settlers. Famed warrior, Pemulwuy, led this campaign.

‘Prospect Hill’ was later split into ‘Prospect’ and ‘Greystanes’. Greystanes is the namesake of a historical home. It was named for the area’s grey-coloured basalt outcrops. ‘Stanes’ the Scottish word for ‘stones’.

The area had many poultry farms prior to the 1950s. Many of these farms were run by Maltese migrants. Greystanes became increasingly residential post-World War II.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Greystanes has a large Maltese community. They host an annual cultural festival.

Greystanes has many parks and sporting facilities. These include Canal Road Park. At 70 metres above sea level, it enjoys a panoramic view of south-west Sydney.

Greystanes also has a BMX track, a small-bore rifle club, and golf course.

Greystanes Shopping Centre has 28 stores, including a large supermarket.
