Grenfell is a town in the local government area of Weddin Shire, in the Central West region of NSW. 370km west of Sydney, it has a population of over 2,500.

History

In 1866, Cornelius O’Brien, a shepherd, found a gold-bearing quartz outcrop in the area. In the following weeks, large groups of gold miners arrived in the area.

Months later in 1867, Grenfell was proclaimed. First known as Emu Creek, it was named after John Granville Grenfell, Gold Commissioner at Forbes. He was wounded and killed by bushrangers in 1866.

From 1867 to 1869, over 40,000 ounces of gold were produced annually. This made Grenfell goldfields the richest goldfield in NSW at the time. By the mid-1870s, gold was in decline in the area.
