Granville is a suburb in New South Wales with a population of over 13,900. It is located 22 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district and has a major railway station.

History

Granville was named after Granville Leverson-Gower who was the British Colonial Secretary in the 1880s. On Anzac day in 1974, the suburb was flooded by the Duck Creek stormwater channel.

The suburb is also the location of the worst rail disaster in Australian history. It was called the Granville railway disaster which happened in 1977. A train came off the track before reaching the Bold Street overpass and caused the bridge to collapse. Sadly, 83 people died.

Granville has four pubs and a club that offer nights of bingo, karaoke and live music. The area also boasts an Olympic size swimming pool and football ground.
