Goulburn is a regional city in New South Wales that is 195 kilometres south-west of Sydney. The area has a population of over 23,005 and is known as Australia’s first inland city.

History

The surveyor, James Meehan named Goulburn after Henry Goulburn. A man named George Johnson was the first to purchase some land in the area between 1839 and 1842. He later became an important part of Goulburn’s development and went on to establish a store with a liquor licence in 1848.

Goulburn is unique because it has been proclaimed a city on two occasions.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The New South Wales Police Academy is based in Goulburn. It is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Goulburn is also home to the Lieder Theatre Company, which is Australia’s longest-running theatre company. It was established in 1891 and still presents exciting performances, events, workshops, readings and projects to this day.

It also has a central park and many wonderful historic buildings. On a quirkier note, the suburb has the world’s largest concrete sheep sculpture.
