Based in New South Wales, Goonellabah is a suburb in Lismore’s east. It sits on the Bruxner Highway, 5km east of Lismore’s city centre. According to the 2006 census, it has a population of over 12,500 people. The median age of its residents is 39.

History

Goonellabah is a native word. It means “native coral tree”. Little is known of Goonellabah’s history. According to Penny Evans, most of the area’s history is oral.

Goonellabah is one of Lismore’s fastest-growing suburbs.

Sporting activities are popular in the suburb. It has many sporting teams who play in local competitions. Sports played include football, hockey, tennis, and cricket.

There are three schools in the suburb. These include Blue Hills College, Kadina High School, and Summerland Christian College.

Residents shop in Goonellabah Village. The shopping centre has a Coles, Target, and Liquorland.
